MOULTRIE, Ga. — Stroke and heart attack prevention, breast cancer awareness, healthy lifestyle choices and blood pressure screenings are just a few of the ways PCOM South Georgia students are educating the community through “We Are Moultrie: Healthier Together.”

The student-led initiative provides an opportunity for students to serve the community, focusing on preventative care through outreach events, education and health screenings.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, Colquitt County has a higher rate of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and respiratory disease in comparison to the state of Georgia. With that in mind, Jeanine Garcia (DO ‘24) created the initiative with a mission to promote health within the local community through education and health screenings in the form of a month-long community health initiative.

Garcia said, “As students, we hope to connect to the community of Moultrie and remind them that we’re not only here to serve them through medicine, but that we’re also a part of this growing community. That’s why I think the initiative has the perfect name ‘We Are Moultrie: Healthier Together.’ By hosting informative booths at local events, students become more familiar with Moultrie residents, expanding on PCOM South Georgia’s mission to serve the local underserved community.”

She added, “It’s extremely important now, more than ever, for medical students to support community wellness and have outreach events. We’re living in a time where medical misinformation spreads like wildfire, so it’s important for health professionals and students to debunk false information and educate our community. We want to foster trust within the community and have them meet our young doctors-in-training to build that rapport with them early on.”

Many of PCOM South Georgia’s student-led clubs have participated in community events to foster involvement, education and awareness. These clubs include Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Research Club, American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), Emergency Medicine Club and American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (ACOP).

Each club sets up a booth and focuses on health and wellness-related topics during the event. Most recently the clubs have participated in the 5k Artfest Marathon and the Calico Art Show where student-volunteers donated their time to execute efforts including blood pressure screenings, breast cancer awareness and education, Spanish translation, heart attack, stroke and diabetes awareness, and physical and mental health handouts for kids.

“This initiative was student-led because we have a passion for serving the community,” said Jasmine Render (DO ‘24), a member of the planning committee. “Many of us began the journey of becoming a physician because we wanted to help people, and that is what we set out to do with our health initiative. Our path to becoming a DO is more than just receiving letters at the end of our names. It is about the people we meet and help along the way. As medical students, we should not be isolated from the community in which we live, play and will eventually serve.”

  • Four things millennial men should know about reproductive health

Four things millennial men should know about reproductive health

Modern lifestyles — which are riddled with stress — require modern interventions so as to ensure health. When it comes to men’s reproductive health, there is a lot of stigma attached to it, which can lead to misconceptions.

Dr Kshitiz Murdia, CEO and co-founder Indira IVF says while there is no one particular cause, doctors — over the years — have narrowed it down to a few harmful ones that millennial men need to keep in mind due to ensure sound reproductive health:

    – Consumption of substances like alcohol and tobacco
    – Sedentary lifestyle
    – Unhealthy diet
    – Sexual diseases such as STDs or STIs
    – Coming in contact with chemicals and harmful toxins
    – Extreme levels of stress, emotional or mental distress
    – Accidents or physical injury

“These causes can not only hamper reproductive health, but can also impact one’s fertility. The conditions that lead to male infertility broadly include infections, hormonal imbalance, obesity, erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation, and exposure to radiation or heavy metals, chemicals and drugs among others,” the doctor explains.

He lists a few things for millennial men to keep in mind to ensure sound reproductive health; read on.

    1. Reproductive health challenges
It is important to educate about reproductive challenges like low sperm count, low testosterone, impotence, STIs etc. can cause complications at later stages in life. There should be awareness about STIs and reproductive infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis, hepatitis B, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, and human papillomavirus (HPV) to take necessary precautions or seek medical help.

    2. Having an active lifestyle
Work from home has induced a new era of being constantly surrounded by computers, while daily physical activity has reduced. Swimming, jogging, cycling and other sports can help in building immunity, remaining active, maintaining hormone levels, especially in the case of diabetes and heart-related diseases. These simple lifestyle changes will help in reducing stress and other hormones that affect sperm production.

    3. Consumption of a healthy diet
Consumption of fruits, vegetables and plenty of water is important for a nutritious diet. Junk food and processed food can prove to be harmful in the longer run and hamper hormone levels in the body. A nutritional diet would help in ensuring not just a strong reproductive health but also overall health.

    4. Personal hygiene
Male genital region is located outside the body to provide cooler temperature for the production of sperms. Personal hygiene — such as washing hands after using the toilet, keeping the genital region clean, wearing washed and breathable underwear, avoiding any chemical or synthetic soaps and ensuring general cleanliness — is essential.

  • NUST MISIS Engineers Create a Street Robot for Healthy Fast Food

NUST MISIS Engineers Create a Street Robot for Healthy Fast Food

MOSCOW, Nov. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — NUST MISIS engineers together with Karfidov Lab have developed a working prototype of a vending machine for preparing healthy dishes. The device cooks dishes from vegetables and cereals in 30-60 seconds, which are suitable for those who live a healthy lifestyle or suffer from allergies and other specific diseases. According to the developers, the healthy food device will cost 1.4 million rubles.

Commissioned by the AFM private company, NUST MISIS engineers, together with the Karfidov Lab design bureau, have developed a prototype of the Salatomat vending machine, which can become part of the city’s healthy food infrastructure. The device is loaded with 16 basic ingredients – vegetables, cereals, potatoes, noodles – and 20 dressings and toppings (sauces, cheese, nuts). With this set, Salatomat can cook up to 1000 different dishes. The user can also create an individual combination of products.

“The process of cooking by the robot begins with the preparation of products – thermal and ultraviolet processing (protection against microbes and viruses), cutting vegetables, stabilizing the temperature (cooling or heating, depending on the dish). This is followed by the dosage determination, packaging and dispensing. The cycle is completed by data fixation for further customer orders,” said Aleksey Karfidov, head of the department of technological equipment engineering at NUST MISIS, co-founder and general designer of Karfidov Lab.

According to the developers, the robot is able to ensure the availability, safety and hygiene of components, quick preparation and individual nutritional composition. The device will also be completely non-contact. All cooking processes are carried out without human intervention.

All ingredients inside SalatOmat containers are pre-conditioned and loaded into hygienically sealed containers. Products can be stored in containers for a maximum of 8 hours, and if not used, they must be disposed of. Cooking takes 30-60 seconds, so the robot can collect from 150 to 500 portions per day. The device requires a power supply and availability for service maintenance (1-2 hours a day). The robot occupies about 2 square meters.

“The device has its brain and memory. The intelligent module collects and stores data on taste preferences and medical indications and restrictions of each order. The container “knows” what is in it due to the RFID chip, ” added Aleksey Karfidov.

In the past two years, several startups that seek to replace human labor in preparing healthy food have been launched in the world. More than 200 Sally the Salad Robots were installed in the United States in 2021. But, unlike the Russian design, it does not exclude the possibility of accidental ingress of a small amount of the contents of neighboring hoppers. Such a product may cause allergic reactions. Also, the Sally’s design does not address the issue of condensate drainage. The cost of Salatomat, according to the developers, will vary around 1.4 million rubles, while Sally costs about 2.2 million rubles.

Customers will be able to use the service using the AFM mobile app. The system will show the nearest point with the robot and remember the client’s preferences.

  • Move while traveling | Sponsored Content

Move while traveling | Sponsored Content

It’s the holiday season, meaning many of us will be traveling near or far.

Also, recently at the office we have had several people ask if there were any suggestions for long car rides, or airplane trips, and how to stay healthy and keep their muscles and joints in working order through the miles.

Frequent travel for work, and also long weekend trips, can have a big impact on your overall health. If you spend more time on the road than you do in the office or at home, you know the difficulty of managing the details of your business appointments, travel accommodations and keeping records that give you a professional edge. Trying to stay on track with your exercise routine, diet and sleep schedule may seem like an impossible feat. But taking a proactive approach to staying healthy on the road may be simpler than you think.

    Attitude is everything

One of the biggest reasons that road warriors’ health tends to suffer during their travels is that they often start with the wrong mindset. For many, this begins with accepting the idea that travel commitments just don’t leave room for healthy habits. But the truth is usually more nuanced than this. What it really takes is a combination of determination and flexibility plus a little advanced planning. Once you make nutrition, exercise and sleep priorities, finding ways to make healthy lifestyle habits sustainable is much easier to do.

    Fitting Workouts into Any Schedule

Regardless of what time of day you have to fit a workout in, make it a priority. When you can get accommodations at a hotel or motel that has a gym, you always have an advantage. If going to a gym is not an option, find another way to get your exercise in. Body weight workouts can offer a very effective alternative. It’s also possible to design an exercise plan around simple equipment that fits easily into your luggage—resistance bands are just one creative solution. For those who need a bit more structure, workout videos on laptops and tablets are just a couple of mouse clicks or finger swipes away. Leaving your hotel room altogether opens up a whole world of other exercise possibilities. Just get outside! Take advantage of the kids’ playground at a local park or find some hiking or jogging trails.

    Getting Good Nutrition

Eating healthy meals on the move is a lot easier today than it once was, thanks to the addition of more and generally better food choices at many airports, hotels and roadside restaurants. Some things to look for are:

    • salads and sides of fruits and veggies;
    • less grain, more meat;
    • fruits and nuts with high anti-oxidant counts (like avocado and almonds).

Many restaurants now offer more detailed nutritional information that gives you more control over portion size as well as how much fat, sugar and sodium you consume. But—once again—this information is only helpful if you actually use it!

    The Value of Sleep

Getting enough rest is an important component of overall good health that too many people simply overlook these days. But it can be especially difficult for frequent travelers to get the amount and quality of sleep they need to be healthy and at their best. To make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep until you’re ready to start your next day, minimize the amount of light and noise in your room and resist the temptations of screen time before you turn in. It’s also a good idea to have a consistent bedtime and to avoid large meals in the hours before going to bed.

It’s important to remember that there is a fundamental difference between occasional travel that interrupts your normal lifestyle rhythms for a short time (like heading up north for deer hunting or traveling for Thanksgiving or Christmas) and frequent or constant travel that actually defines many of those rhythms. If your work requires you to be on the move often, it’s up to you to develop more flexible strategies that give your body what it needs. Over the long run, this will help ensure that you stay healthier, happier and more productive! Do your best to avoid refined foods (for the most part, it’s hard to do this during the holidays!), get outside and move your muscles and joints, and get adjusted!
