    newsletters, editors-pick-list,

After a big year of COVID lockdowns for many in the Bega Valley, ReBoot in Bermagui will finally be held in the picturesque coastal town this weekend on December 4 and 5. After getting postponed in October – and cancelled last year – organiser Julie Rutherford said the team was really committed to ensuring the event would run in 2021. ReBoot is now in its seventh year, and Ms Rutherford expected that while it might be difficult to gather the same numbers as the October long weekend usually brought in, she was hoping more Bega Valley and Eurobodalla locals would get behind the event. READ MORE: Ms Rutherford encouraged people to register online ahead of time, up until Friday morning December 3, as it helped the team plan for the days and ensured a place in the events. Registering online also saves money on ticketed events. People can also register on the day as long as they arrive early enough, 7:30am on Saturday morning for the fun runs and the tug-o-war and between 8.30 and 9.45am on Sunday morning for the swimming. “The highlight of the weekend really is the fact that everyone’s out in the fresh air, even more so since COVID. We’ve had so few events in the last two years so the whole idea of ReBoot is for people to get out and do stuff. “It’s not for people to sit on the sidelines, it’s for people to have a go,” she said. There will be free activities such as yoga, Pilates, and tai chi where people just need to register for the activity and make sure to bring their own mat. There are other activities offered at affordable prices such as stand-up paddle boarding, surf lessons, sound healing sessions, and barefoot bowls. The Skate, SKoot & BMX Competition is sure to be a hit with great prizes up for grabs. “The whole idea is just for people to get out and do stuff and just be active in whatever form it takes for you,” said Ms Rutherford. “It’s a community event so it’s just about being out with friends and family and just enjoying having a go at something, and being in a beautiful landscape like Bermagui.” There are social events also happening around the town on Saturday and Sunday. Many of the prizes include vouchers to be spent in the town, thanks to the Bermagui Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, so it might be a good time to spend them around town. The River Rock Café will have live music on Friday night and an open mic night from 7pm until 10pm. There will also be live music at the Bermagui Country Club from 7pm until 9pm. On Saturday afternoon from 2pm there will be live music at Camel Rock Brewery and on Sunday afternoon there will be live music at the Bermagui Beach Hotel. READ ALSO: South Coast Gig Guide, December 1-6 A healthy breakfast will be held on Sunday morning from 8am until 11am for $10, or free for those participating in the fun run, swim, and bike ride. There will be a smorgasbord of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food available such as mini quiches, egg and bacon rolls, yogurt with muesli fruit cups, fresh fruit salads, bruschetta, and chia puddings. On Saturday from 11.15 the tug-o-war will be held at Dickinson Park opposite Bermagui Beach Hotel. Kelly Eastwood from Eastwood’s will be running a Banh mi (Vietnamese roll) food stall and other cafés and restaurants around town may be offering healthy food and snacks at discounted rates. The program can be found on ReBoot Bermagui’s website. Julie Rutherford is happy to be contacted on 0428 933444 for more information. The weather is looking partly cloudy but clear of rain on Saturday and Sunday. In the event of rain, Ms Rutherford said the only event that would be affected was the bike ride, but the run and swim activities would go ahead unless there were storms or dangerous conditions. All people participating in any of the activities must be fully-vaccinated and event organisers are asking people to stay home if they present with any COVID symptoms. The event will go ahead thanks to local sponsors and grants from the Commonwealth Bank and Destination NSW.

10 Celebrities Living With Diabetes | News

The month of November ignites thoughts of buffet spreads of comfort food, planning the perfect outfit for the living room, and preparing witty responses to your aunt’s questions.

However, November is also National Diabetes Awareness Month, which is recognized to offer resources and highlight the effects of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is characterized as the lack of insulin production, while type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90-95 percent of all diabetes cases, is caused by the body’s ineffective use of insulin.

Dr. Colin Washington, MD/MPH, likened diabetes to a marathon over a sprint.

“Once on this journey, it is important to remember that lifestyle changes do not need to occur overnight, but we must continue to focus on ever-improving behaviors,” said Washington, an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Emory University.

The National Diabetes Statistics Report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2020 states that 32.4 million Americans, including children, have diabetes. African American adults are 60 percent more likely than Caucasian adults to be diagnosed with diabetes.

According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is a significant cause of kidney failure, blindness, heart attacks, strokes, and limb amputation.

“We must look [within the community] to learn how to manage our risk until a solution is found,” said Washington.

One necessity during this tempting holiday is having a support system of loved ones and medical practitioners.

“It is important to maintain a healthy sphere of influence around those with diabetes to allow for the best opportunity for their diabetes care to be a success,” said Washington. “It is also important for those caring [for others] with diabetes to remain in close contact with their healthcare providers.”

Several factors, including obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and cigarette smoking, contribute to the overwhelming diagnosis of African Americans. This Thanksgiving, consider a vegetable medley instead of mashed potatoes or substituting fat-free broth for butter.

“As access to healthy foods becomes more difficult, we must continue to rely on our community to provide the tools to try [to] minimize the risk of developing diabetes,” said Washington.

Dr. Washington insists everyone remember that there is no hiatus for diabetes during the holiday season.

“Thanksgiving is a time for many to come together over a wonderful meal and celebrate all that we are grateful for,” Washington said. “But during this time, we must also remain grateful for our health and continue to do everything we can to preserve it.”

4 Top Fitness Influencers Give Healthy Living Tips

fitness influencer carla kemp sitting in a gym and smiling

    Earl E. Gibson III

Influencer: Carla Kemp, 58, personal assistant-real estate investor

    Instagram: @fabnfitbycarla

    Location: Los Angeles

After having her daughter, in 1984, Kemp was determined to get back to a healthy weight. That motivated her to join a gym. Once she saw the results of regular workouts, she says, she never stopped.

    Her workout routine

I choose different fitness components to focus on each day, without having to spend hours each time working out. I do cross training — yoga for flexibility; a cardiovascular workout for my heart, like a spin class two or three times a week. Then I’ll follow that up with ab work or stretching. The other three days I focus on weight training, with free weights or machines.

    Relying on music for motivation

I listen to my music. I love Motown, old-school music. I walk in with my music in my ears and leave with my music; that keeps me motivated and going. If I forget my music, I’m like, “Oh no, what am I going to do?”

    How she mixes it up

When I get burned out I’ll hire a trainer or I’ll take on new activities. Those have included joining a swim team, playing tennis and training for a marathon. I’m just kind of an adventurous person by spirit. I like trying new things. Roller skating is my new hobby. It’s a great workout.

    Her best get-started advice

Establish a daily routine that you can stick to. If you haven’t been doing anything, start with something not too aggressive, like a 10-minute walk, then slowly add on to it. You’ll notice you start looking forward to it.

You also need to make the correlation that exercise is just like brushing your teeth, just like combing your hair — it’s something you have to do. Once you start doing it, you will stop fighting it; it will become a normal part of what you do.

What she eats throughout the day

Breakfast: I drink a protein shake or fruit with a little yogurt, granola, nuts or seeds. I try to eat whatever fruit is in season.

Lunch: Simple works for me: salad with greens, kale, arugula, veggies, nuts and maybe some fruit in it. I do think a crunch factor is good, as it helps satisfy you — cucumbers, carrots, radishes, broccoli.

Dinner: I like to have some type of warm vegetables over a salad or rice or couscous, warm cauliflower steak, sweet potatoes.

Nighttime: Popcorn, that’s my treat. I drizzle some olive oil on it and sprinkle on sea salt. I air-pop it. I don’t have a microwave.

How she indulges, just a little

If I’m out with a girlfriend and she’s having something I wouldn’t typically eat, like a dessert or fried food, I might indulge in it. I just don’t go overboard. I’ll also have a cocktail out occasionally.

How age factors into her workout

I spend more time warming up. I also notice that weight training is so critical to hold on to muscle tone. I always knew flexibility was important, but now I realize it even more.

I don’t feel the need to be working out at the intensity that I was when I was in my 20s and 30s. Strength training, breaking a sweat and consistency is now key. I’m kind of taking the easier approach because I don’t want to cause an injury — even a minor one. If something made me stop, I would just be a wreck.
