4 Top Fitness Influencers Give Healthy Living Tips

    Earl E. Gibson III

Influencer: Carla Kemp, 58, personal assistant-real estate investor

    Instagram: @fabnfitbycarla

    Location: Los Angeles

After having her daughter, in 1984, Kemp was determined to get back to a healthy weight. That motivated her to join a gym. Once she saw the results of regular workouts, she says, she never stopped.

    Her workout routine

I choose different fitness components to focus on each day, without having to spend hours each time working out. I do cross training — yoga for flexibility; a cardiovascular workout for my heart, like a spin class two or three times a week. Then I’ll follow that up with ab work or stretching. The other three days I focus on weight training, with free weights or machines.

    Relying on music for motivation

I listen to my music. I love Motown, old-school music. I walk in with my music in my ears and leave with my music; that keeps me motivated and going. If I forget my music, I’m like, “Oh no, what am I going to do?”

    How she mixes it up

When I get burned out I’ll hire a trainer or I’ll take on new activities. Those have included joining a swim team, playing tennis and training for a marathon. I’m just kind of an adventurous person by spirit. I like trying new things. Roller skating is my new hobby. It’s a great workout.

    Her best get-started advice

Establish a daily routine that you can stick to. If you haven’t been doing anything, start with something not too aggressive, like a 10-minute walk, then slowly add on to it. You’ll notice you start looking forward to it.

You also need to make the correlation that exercise is just like brushing your teeth, just like combing your hair — it’s something you have to do. Once you start doing it, you will stop fighting it; it will become a normal part of what you do.

What she eats throughout the day

Breakfast: I drink a protein shake or fruit with a little yogurt, granola, nuts or seeds. I try to eat whatever fruit is in season.

Lunch: Simple works for me: salad with greens, kale, arugula, veggies, nuts and maybe some fruit in it. I do think a crunch factor is good, as it helps satisfy you — cucumbers, carrots, radishes, broccoli.

Dinner: I like to have some type of warm vegetables over a salad or rice or couscous, warm cauliflower steak, sweet potatoes.

Nighttime: Popcorn, that’s my treat. I drizzle some olive oil on it and sprinkle on sea salt. I air-pop it. I don’t have a microwave.

How she indulges, just a little

If I’m out with a girlfriend and she’s having something I wouldn’t typically eat, like a dessert or fried food, I might indulge in it. I just don’t go overboard. I’ll also have a cocktail out occasionally.

How age factors into her workout

I spend more time warming up. I also notice that weight training is so critical to hold on to muscle tone. I always knew flexibility was important, but now I realize it even more.

I don’t feel the need to be working out at the intensity that I was when I was in my 20s and 30s. Strength training, breaking a sweat and consistency is now key. I’m kind of taking the easier approach because I don’t want to cause an injury — even a minor one. If something made me stop, I would just be a wreck.

NUST MISIS Engineers Create a Street Robot for Healthy Fast Food

MOSCOW, Nov. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — NUST MISIS engineers together with Karfidov Lab have developed a working prototype of a vending machine for preparing healthy dishes. The device cooks dishes from vegetables and cereals in 30-60 seconds, which are suitable for those who live a healthy lifestyle or suffer from allergies and other specific diseases. According to the developers, the healthy food device will cost 1.4 million rubles.

Commissioned by the AFM private company, NUST MISIS engineers, together with the Karfidov Lab design bureau, have developed a prototype of the Salatomat vending machine, which can become part of the city’s healthy food infrastructure. The device is loaded with 16 basic ingredients – vegetables, cereals, potatoes, noodles – and 20 dressings and toppings (sauces, cheese, nuts). With this set, Salatomat can cook up to 1000 different dishes. The user can also create an individual combination of products.

“The process of cooking by the robot begins with the preparation of products – thermal and ultraviolet processing (protection against microbes and viruses), cutting vegetables, stabilizing the temperature (cooling or heating, depending on the dish). This is followed by the dosage determination, packaging and dispensing. The cycle is completed by data fixation for further customer orders,” said Aleksey Karfidov, head of the department of technological equipment engineering at NUST MISIS, co-founder and general designer of Karfidov Lab.

According to the developers, the robot is able to ensure the availability, safety and hygiene of components, quick preparation and individual nutritional composition. The device will also be completely non-contact. All cooking processes are carried out without human intervention.

All ingredients inside SalatOmat containers are pre-conditioned and loaded into hygienically sealed containers. Products can be stored in containers for a maximum of 8 hours, and if not used, they must be disposed of. Cooking takes 30-60 seconds, so the robot can collect from 150 to 500 portions per day. The device requires a power supply and availability for service maintenance (1-2 hours a day). The robot occupies about 2 square meters.

“The device has its brain and memory. The intelligent module collects and stores data on taste preferences and medical indications and restrictions of each order. The container “knows” what is in it due to the RFID chip, ” added Aleksey Karfidov.

In the past two years, several startups that seek to replace human labor in preparing healthy food have been launched in the world. More than 200 Sally the Salad Robots were installed in the United States in 2021. But, unlike the Russian design, it does not exclude the possibility of accidental ingress of a small amount of the contents of neighboring hoppers. Such a product may cause allergic reactions. Also, the Sally’s design does not address the issue of condensate drainage. The cost of Salatomat, according to the developers, will vary around 1.4 million rubles, while Sally costs about 2.2 million rubles.

Customers will be able to use the service using the AFM mobile app. The system will show the nearest point with the robot and remember the client’s preferences.

Healthy tips to help diabetics kick-start their day

Starting the day on a healthy and cheerful note sets the mood for the entire day right. Also, the signs you experience in your body upon waking up are a great signal of what lies within. Some feel acidic while some feel bloated and low in energy even as some are just a ray of sunshine upon waking up!

“The foods you have first thing in the morning, especially if you are diabetic, should be the ones that help you keep your blood sugar levels under control, soothe any discomforts and help you get ready to go!” said celebrity nutritionist Shweta Shah.

    Here’s what to consider.

*Hydration is the first thing to remember upon waking up. As your body is thirsty after hours of not having water during sleep, the first thing you need to do is consume 1-2 glasses of warm water to quench your thirst and revive your system.

*On rising, grind seven leaves each of baelpatta, curry patta, and basil in some water. “These leaves are a boon to the diabetic body. Drink this juice on an empty stomach for considerably low blood sugar levels throughout the day. Later, have Arjun chaal (a natural tree bark herb) water which is a great tonic to manage high sugar levels. To prepare it, soak 1 tbsp Arjun chaal powder in water overnight and drink it in the morning,” mentioned Shah.

*Many people experience heartburn or acidity upon waking up. This could be because of late dinner. “Try to keep your dinner time at least three hours before bedtime. To cure acidity upon waking up, have 8-10 soaked black raisins on empty stomach. Black raisins are rich in nutrients and neutralise the high acidic levels in your digestive system. People who feel bloated are advised to drink the tea made up of 1 tbsp cumin seeds, 1 cardamom, 1 tbsp fennel seeds, pinch of carom seeds in 500 ml water, boiled and brought to half. Make sure to drink it lukewarm, she said.

*Diabetics must have a light breakfast with seasonal fruits, and a combination of both carbohydrates and proteins. Having a full loaded breakfast of cereals is not advised in Ayurveda. “Actually, having a heavy breakfast is a myth as your body is still digesting last night’s dinner. It will be an added burden on your digestive system to digest an even heavier breakfast,” she remarked.

Instead, you can add natural protein sources to your homemade breakfast and have things like poha along with sprouts, eggs with gluten-fried toast, oats porridge with overnight soaked sprouts!

*Ash gourd is an ideal vegetable with soothing benefits as it is alkaline, making it an excellent choice to have  mid-morning to balance the blood sugar spikes. Have it as a juice — ½ ash gourd (approx 250 gm) and ½ sliced lemon.

*Avoid having tea or coffee first thing in the morning as they are the number one cause of acidity, constipation, and all gastric problems. “Also, do not practice ‘Virudh Ahaar’ like mixing milk with fruits, which is a very common mistake,” she mentioned.

Keep your mornings simple and hassle-free, meditate, and do not participate in stress-building activities to keep the blood sugar in check!

Confused on what exercises you can do when you’re pregnant or postpartum? Certified personal trainer and new mom Sarah Bowmar has the answers, Heal Me Healthy.

Whether you’re in your first trimester or are postpartum, there is a lot of information on the Internet for new moms. How to exercise during your pregnancy is just one of the places where you can get lost in what you can and can’t do.

“Unfortunately, there’s a lot of bad, free information out there,” said Sarah Bowmar, Certified Personal Trainer and CEO of Bowmar Nutrition and Apex Protein Snacks.

Bowmar recently gave birth to a baby girl, so she understands how complicated it can be for women to know what’s safe with their workouts during pregnancy.

“Just more and more research is coming out from the American College of Gynecology that actually says remaining active while pregnant results in a healthier baby, it results in less complications during actual birth, it results in less C-sections,” said Bowmar about the health benefits for continuing to workout when you’re pregnant.

However, Bowmar also said she knows there are extenuating circumstances where some women are bedridden or they are carrying multiples and they can’t remain as active. So be sure to check with your doctor before you start any type of workout routine when you’re pregnant.

There’s a lot of stress as a new mom- your world completely changes in the blink of an eye. Josh has been the best dad in the world (I hate using the world help because he isn’t helping, he is a parent too, he just can’t do a lot of the things that baby needs right now but he does as much as he can).

If you are currently pregnant, Bowmar recommends walking every day. She said it helps with swelling, and your overall balance.

“I think the most important thing women struggle with while pregnant and during their postpartum journeys is the core,” Bowmar said. “Your abs do start to separate and there’s no way around that. But what we can do when pregnant is try to prevent any excess stretching.”

Bowmar says to do exercises that focus on your public floor health and lower abs.

Once you’ve given birth to your baby, Bowmar recommends starting with walking for exercise and waiting for the six week mark to do anything more.

“It’s just about rebuilding your strength,” said Bowmar.
